Ved

Veds are called अपौरुषेय that means it is not created by man i.e impersonal/authorless and believed to be the words of Ishwara, eternal. Rishish are द्रष्टा (seers) rather than author of Ved. Different scholars date Ved differently. Scroll-down this page from Vedic Heritage site to see one set of such dates by various scholars. 
To understand Ved, one should study all six Vednags. The main content of Ved is called Samhita (collection) and is organzed in terms of Mandals consisting of hymns (mantras).  To explain various aspect of Ved, Rishies created Brahmans, Aranyaks and Upnishads. Upveds are applied knowledge from Veds. These are pictorially shown below:
